Gym Junkies

So this guy turns up at our class. I’ll be totally honest here. I don’t go to the gym to meet guys. I really don’t. I’m sweaty. I’m hot (as in overheated) and I’m hurting all over. And the only thing I really want is for our sadistic, evil fitness instructor to shut up and let me go home to shower and binge watch episodes of Buffy (totally retro, but what can I say? I love shows about girls that kick butt). But sometimes life just hands you something on a plate, and what are you going to do? Say no? Not unless you're an idiot.

So this guy turns up at our class. I won’t say everyone’s jaws dropped, but a few heads turned in his direction, and believe me, they weren’t all what you’d call young. Or even youngish. Muriel, seventy if she’s a day, looked over and then gave me a cheeky wink. I love Muriel. She’s the only one who tells Adrian (he’s our instructor) when we’ve had enough. I bet she’d even give Buffy a run for her money. No one messes with Muriel.

But, getting off track here. So this guy comes into class. And, seriously, he’d easily fit in on Buffy, or even The Vampire Diaries. Move over, Damien. You’ve got competition.

But this guy ... dark, dark hair over darker eyes. I give him my best smile and move over so he knows there’s a spot right next to me. He takes the hint. Brownie points for that, shows he isn’t clueless.

‘Hey, I’m Jamie,’ I say, and wait for him to reply.

‘Hello, Jamie,’ he says.

I wait, but total silence. Obviously he needs encouragement. ‘And you are ...’

‘Here to increase my cardio rate and strengthen my muscle tone,’ he answers. Dead straight face, not a glimmer of a smile. Funny guy, not. But I’m not one to give up easily.

‘So, you got a name?’

‘Yes,’ he says, and starts to stretch.

I wait. Jeez, I’ve never had to work this hard before. I give him one more chance before I decide his real name is Loser with a capital L. ‘And that is ...’

He finally gets it. How can someone so hot be so dumb?

‘You want to know my name? Orion, but most people call me Rion.’

We don’t get a chance to say anything else because Adrian comes in, adjusting his microphone, and gets right into it.

‘All right, folks, let’s get warmed up and move it. Come on, Jamie, focus. Let me feel the energy. You right there, Muriel?’

‘Adrian, I was right before you were even born.’

Everyone laughs, but everyone does what Adrian says, even hot, shy, clueless guy named after some constellation. Jeez, some parents have a lot to answer for.

For the next hour, Adrian pushes us hard and I don’t have time to think about anything except surviving and not looking like a fool next to hot, shy, clueless guy, who is doing okay. He even looks like he’s enjoying it. Freak.

Finally, Adrian cuts us a break and we start cooling down.
